Dementia-Friendly Activities in NYC: AFA’s Teal Room Community Classes in the Education and Resource Center
AFA’s Teal Room Community Classes provide a variety of in-person therapeutic programs ranging from the creative arts therapies, Broadway singer performances, chair yoga, gardening classes, and more! AFA’s Teal Room Community Classes are always FREE and open to the public. These classes are a great option for anyone looking for dementia-friendly activities in New York City.
Classes are offered in-person at AFA’s Education and Resource Center in Manhattan, located at: 322 8th Ave, 7th floor, New York, NY 10001.
Registration is required. Deadline is noon, day of event.

Join AFA for a Broadway music performance with The Caravan of Angels. The Caravan of Angels Foundation is a nonprofit organization that makes theater more accessible by bringing professional singers out into the community to perform a variety of familiar Broadway and other well-known songs. Sing along and enjoy some beautiful Broadway hits!
Join recreational therapist Jodie Berman, MS, CTRS, CMDCP, for an afternoon of fun and games. Experience a variety of sights, songs, tastes, textures and scents in this fun and interactive game, inspired by the popular show Jeopardy. Players will be encouraged to participate in a variety of ways where they can play to win or just have fun. Join us for an hour of engagement that stimulates all five senses in a social and supportive environment. Join AFA’s Linda and Matthew for Memory Café Monday. In this month’s Memory Café, you will have opportunities to explore interesting textures and objects that will spark memories and discussion. There will be two separate stations set up: The first station will have materials related to the season, and the second will have two winter-themed creative projects. Let’s explore our senses as we embrace the winter season.
Engage in a therapeutic music group experience with board certified music therapist Ariel Weissberger of Berko Music Therapy in AFA’s Education and Resource Center. This session will include live music and opportunities to actively participate by listening, singing and playing along with percussion instruments. This engaging workshop will leave you feeling inspired and connected.
Join fused-glass jewelry instructor Naomi Rabinowitz for an engaging and fun jewelry-making art class. You will create easy-to-make pieces using pre-cut glass, available in hundreds of beautiful colors. Naomi will guide you through simple instructions and then fire your creation in her kiln at home. After this process, you will be contacted to receive your completed piece of jewelry to pick up in the Education and Resource Center.
Join horticultural therapist Sallie Stutz for a lively gardening session where you will learn an introduction to holiday plants such as Christmas cactus and poinsettia. In this session, you will have the opportunity to make a small decorative holiday floral arrangement to take home and share with loved ones. Get in the holiday-spirit with AFA!
Join AFA and Sing for Your Seniors for some live Broadway tunes. Sing For Your Seniors Sessions are customized, live musical concerts that help make meaningful connections with the community. Multiple SFYS performing artists will share 45 minutes of songs and stories accompanied by a pianist, creating a diverse program and joyful environment. Sing along and enjoy some beautiful Broadway hits. Following the session, you will have the opportunity to engage in a 15 minute “meet & mingle” social time to meet the performers and ask questions.
Join AFA and Arts & Minds for an engaging art experience. Art activates the senses, stimulates the brain and enlivens the imagination. In this session, a work of art from a NYC museum collection will be viewed and discussed. Then you will have opportunities to express yourself through your own artwork.
AFA welcomes you to our Education and Resource Center for an interactive and lively piano concert. Enrich your day with beautiful songs from the Golden Age of Broadway and a few holiday favorites with singer and pianist Steven Carl McCasland who will call out some name-that-tune questions and offer fun facts throughout his performance.
Join AFA’s manager of therapeutic programing, Jackie Gatto, MS, R-DMT, CDP, for a low-impact chair fitness class to energize your afternoon. Driven by fun and festive holiday hits, this class will target all major muscle groups, while focusing on range of motion, strength, posture and fun. Wear comfortable/loose fitted clothing and sneakers and join us for a holiday-inspired fitness class in AFA’s Education and Resource Center. Open to all abilities.
AFA welcomes you for an afternoon of reminiscence and live music. Fill your day with treasured oldies tunes from the 50s, 60s, & 70s, performed by professional NYC-based musician and singer Logan Whaley. Enjoy an afternoon of familiar songs in AFA’s Education and Resource Center. Sing along, relax and enjoy.
