Dementia-Friendly Activities in NYC: AFA’s Teal Room Community Classes in the Education and Resource Center


AFA’s Teal Room Community Classes provide a variety of in-person therapeutic programs ranging from the creative arts therapies, Broadway singer performances, chair yoga, gardening classes, and more! AFA’s Teal Room Community Classes are always FREE and open to the public. These classes are a great option for anyone looking for dementia-friendly activities in New York City.
Classes are offered in-person at AFA’s Education and Resource Center in Manhattan, located at: 322 8th Ave, 7th floor, New York, NY 10001.
Registration is required. Deadline is noon, day of event.

Dance & Movement with AFA’s Jackie

Join AFA’s manager of therapeutic programing, Jackie Gatto, MS, R-DMT, CDP, for a rhythmic and uplifting afternoon of dance and movement to awaken the body and inspire the soul, both sitting in chairs and standing. A variety of props will be used to encourage you to move your body in different ways, while enticing creativity. No prior dance experience necessary. Please wear comfortable clothing and secure shoes.


Broadway Hour with Sing for Your Seniors

Join AFA and Sing for Your Seniors for some live Broadway tunes. Sing For Your Seniors sessions are customized, live musical concerts that help make meaningful connections with the community. Multiple SFYS performing artists will share 45 minutes of songs and stories accompanied by a pianist, creating a diverse program and joyful environment. Following the session, you will have the opportunity to engage in a 15-minute “meet & mingle” social time with the performers.

This 4-session series are free monthly social offerings for persons living with dementia and their family, friends, and care partners. Together we will explore the creative arts, music & movement, and a variety of social activities that will spark memories and spread joy!





TimeSlips with Linda

Let’s celebrate Broadway! Get in where you fit in. Join Linda Cholodenko, a musical theatre veteran and certified teaching artist, for an afternoon of showtunes and creativity. In each session you will warm up by singing along to familiar Broadway hits and follow fun and simple movement instructions. Each session will close with TimeSlips, an activity where we become storytellers through creative and imaginative discovery. This program is accessible and open to all.


Chair Yoga with Cleymar Yoga

Art with Emily: Your Garden

Welcome summer with some creative arts. Join Emily Sharp, LCAT, ATR-BC, for an enriching art-making experience. Exploring the theme of “your garden,” you will reflect beautiful memories in nature. Some flowers and photos of nature art will be added to the table for an extra sensory experience. Everyone will be given a wide variety of materials to use to create their own abstract nature art, with guidance and ideas for engaging with materials. Suggested materials include markers, crayons/pastels and watercolors/paint. This group generally creates a sense of appreciation for beauty and a celebration of spring/summer.


Monday Movie Matinee: Kiss Me Kate

Join AFA for a Monday Movie Matinee presenting the musical Kiss Me Kate. Egotistical leading man, director and producer Fred Graham is reunited with his ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi, when the two are forced to play opposite one another in a new production of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The battle of the sexes continues onstage and off, as it becomes clear that, as much as this couple professes to hate each other, they are also still in love. Alongside their bickering liaison, the show’s supporting actress, Lois Lane, protects her gambling boyfriend, Bill, as he attempts to evade the clutches of local gangsters. Throw in a number of cases of mistaken identity, the mob and comedic routines into the mix and you get Kiss Me, Kate — a dazzling Broadway classic that earned the first Tony award for Best Musical (https://stageagent.com/shows/musical/1645/kiss-me-kate). Acoustic Guitar Concert with Josh: Classic Rock & Beyond

Relax and unwind with live acoustic guitar tunes with Josh Santiago. Josh is a guitarist and singer based in NYC and his love for music permeates through his upbeat performances. Josh performs in several classic rock cover groups – most notably his band, WALRUS, NYC’s premier Beatles jam band. Expect to hear your favorite hits from the classic rock catalog and beyond.
