Mission

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is dedicated to advancing understanding of the human experience of spousal dementia caregiving through innovative, person-centered research. Our study, “Exploring the Biopsychosocial Impact of Dementia Caregiving on Spousal Caregivers’ Health Outcomes,” seeks to highlight how the emotional, physical, and social dimensions of caregiving intersect to influence spousal caregivers’ overall well-being.

Through this nationwide initiative, AFA aims to identify risk and resilience factors that shape caregiver health, inform evidence-based interventions, and promote health strategies that enhance quality of life for families living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Guided by a commitment to compassion, inclusion, and scientific excellence, this research embodies AFA’s mission to ensure that no one faces dementia alone, empowering caregivers with knowledge, support, and hope for healthier futures.

Current Flagship Study: Exploring the Biopsychosocial Impact of Dementia Caregiving on Spousal Caregivers’ Health Outcomes

About the Study

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is proud to lead this landmark nationwide study through its Research Department, advancing understanding of how dementia caregiving affects the health and well-being of spousal and long-term partner caregivers across the United States.

Caregiving for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia can be both deeply meaningful and profoundly challenging. Over time, the physical, emotional, and social demands of spousal caregiving may impact caregivers’ own health, yet these effects remain underexplored in large-scale, inclusive research. This study seeks to fill that critical gap by examining how chronic caregiving stress influences biological, psychological, and social health outcomes among diverse populations.

Study Design

Using a mixed-methods research approach, AFA’s research team is collecting both quantitative health data and qualitative personal narratives from caregivers nationwide. This design allows researchers to integrate statistical health measures with the lived experiences of spousal caregivers, giving a holistic view of the caregiving journey.

The study’s key objectives include evaluating:

  • Physiological Outcomes – Measuring biological indicators of stress and physical health such as sleep quality/disruption.
  • Mental Health Indicators – Assessing levels of anxiety, depression, caregiver burden, and anticipatory grief, which can profoundly affect emotional resilience and quality of life.
  • Cognitive Function – Exploring whether prolonged spousal caregiving stress contributes to subtle changes in memory, attention, or executive functioning, highlighting the potential cognitive toll of sustained stress.
  • Social Determinants of Health – Examining the influence of race, ethnicity, income, education, language, geographic access, and social support systems on spousal caregiver outcomes and disparities in health experiences.

Conceptual Framework

Grounded in the biopsychosocial model of health, this study recognizes that well-being is not determined by biology alone. It is shaped by the interplay of physical conditions, psychological stress responses, and the broader social environment. By applying this framework, AFA seeks to capture the complex, interconnected realities of spousal caregiving, highlighting both vulnerabilities and sources of resilience among spousal caregivers.

Impact and Future Directions

Findings from this research will have far-reaching implications for public health policy, caregiver support services, and clinical intervention design. The insights gained will guide the creation of evidence-based programs that promote health equity, prevent caregiver burnout, and enhance the quality of life for both caregivers and the individuals they support.

Ultimately, this study reflects AFA’s commitment to ensuring that every caregiver regardless of background, income, or location, has access to knowledge, care, and compassion. Through science, advocacy, and education, AFA continues to champion the well-being of families living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
