Supporting the LGBTQ+ Community in Dementia Care

June 6, 2023 @ 8:30 am 12:00 pm EDT

FREE CE Workshop!

2 CE credits for licensed social workers, certified case managers, and other professions accepting social work CE credits, including New Jersey.

Location: The Watermark at Brooklyn Heights

21 Clark St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Decades of social movements organized around the acceptance and human rights of LGBTQ+ persons began as a response to centuries of persecution by church, state and medical authorities. Such experienced discrimination and trauma have resulted in health disparities, barriers to care, and distrust toward service providers.

This social and cultural competence course aims to teach attendees about the historical journey of the LGBTQ+ community that is founded on incredible strength and chosen families.

Attendees will learn about the unique needs of LGBTQ+ older adults, and what service providers can do to implement culturally responsive support that also addresses and acknowledges the stigma and discrimination experienced from the healthcare system.

This workshop is fully interactive. Attendees may ask and answer questions throughout the presentation and participate in instructor-led discussions, case vignette discussions, and a Q&A session at the end.

The Watermark in Brooklyn Heights is hosting this event as an opportunity to show their new location in Brooklyn Heights. They will offer a continental breakfast and snacks.
