Support Available for Families Affected by Alzheimer’s in Areas Impacted by Severe Winter Storms

Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Helpline Open Seven Days a Week to Provide Support, Assistance and Answers to Questions

(February 18, 2021)— With severe winter storms causing significant hardships for millions of people in Texas, Oklahoma and other areas, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is informing residents in the affected areas that the AFA Helpline is available to provide support, assistance and answers to questions to families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease.

AFA’s Helpline social workers are available seven days a week to answer questions such as:

  • How can I keep my loved one calm and feel safe?
  • What steps can I take to deal with the additional stress and anxiety?
  • Are there ways to handle the disruptions to my loved one’s daily routine?
  • What steps can I take to reduce the likelihood that my loved one wanders from home, particularly at night?
  • What can I do to help prevent or reduce agitation?

Families can connect with the AFA Helpline in any of the following ways:

  • Via phone by calling 866-232-8484
  • Sending a text message to 646-586-5283
  • Web chat by visiting www.alzfdn.org and clicking on the blue and white chat icon on the lower right hand corner of the page

“The severe winter weather is creating enormous challenges which magnify the stress of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “Whether it’s providing answers and support or simply being a sympathetic ear to listen, AFA’s licensed social workers are available seven days a week through the AFA Helpline to help however they can.”

Individuals can connect with a licensed social worker seven days a week through the AFA Helpline by calling 866-232-8484, sending a text to 646-586-5283 or web chatting through www.alzfdn.org.
