AFA Partners in Care: Supporting Individuals Living with Dementia seeks to equip myriad health care professionals with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to work effectively with individuals living with dementia, their families, and colleagues. This training program reflects a philosophy of care that the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) strongly supports: relationship building. This is a person-centered approach that promotes the unique strengths, goals, and humanity of each individual; involves interdisciplinary collaboration among care providers; and places individuals with dementia and their families at the center of decision-making. Through encouraging attendees to reflect upon their experiences working with this population, professional strengths and areas for professional growth, the workshop seeks to foster mindfulness, introspection, and critical thinking.
From this workshop you will be able to:
- Develop a foundational understanding of dementia-related illnesses
- Build therapeutic relationships with those affected by dementia-related illnesses
- Define the importance of facilitating meaningful life
- Identify effective communication strategies
- Apply appropriate strategies for responding to distressing behaviors
- Explain the importance of self-care for professionals

Participants who attend the entire workshop, successfully pass the course exam, and complete the course evaluation will earn certification as an AFA Dementia Care Partner. This certification is recognized by health care organizations throughout the United States and can be annually renewed. 6 continuing education credits are available for social workers, certified case managers, nursing home administrators, and assisted living administrators.
Online registration is now closed. Please contact Jennifer Reeder at jreeder@alzfdn.org if you are interested in attending to find out if there are any openings available.
