The Alzheimer's Foundation of America is saddened by the loss of two-time Tony Award-winning actress Frances Sternhagen. Although the stage was her preferred home – she won her Tonys for featured roles in The Heiress and The Good Doctor -- she worked widely in television, appearing in numerous series including “Cheers,” “ER,” “The Closer” and “Sex and the City,” receiving several Emmy nominations, and appeared in about two dozen films. In the theatre community she is described repeatedly by two words: kind and generous. She had vascular dementia following a stroke in 2013.

Loved her work.
I was blessed to experience her kindness and generosity several times. She was a blessing to all who knew her.
Wonderful character actress. My condolences to all her family and friends.
Her versatility was always so impressive. She will be missed. So sad to learn that she was coping with dementia.
So sad. Praying for her family and friends.
She will be missed
I remember her as Cliff Clavin's mom on Cheers. She made me laugh. I'm sorry that she had to struggle with dementia at the end.
Same as my mom, so sad, such a hideous disease
A great talent lost to a horrible illness.
🩵 We are extraordinarily grateful to everyone who donated to AFA as part of Giving Tuesday. If you weren't able to give Tuesday, you haven't missed your chance to make a difference for families affected by Alzheimer's.

🕊️ The Alzheimer's Foundation of America is saddened by the loss of former Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman to serve on the US Supreme Court.
🩵 In 2018, O'Connor revealed in a letter that she had been diagnosed with the beginning stages of dementia, probably Alzheimer's disease. “While the final chapter of my life with dementia may be trying, nothing has diminished my gratitude and deep appreciation for the countless blessings of my life.”

It is incredibly sad to watch a formerly bright, intelligent and talented mind deteriorate. She was an important force, carving out her place in the history of our justice system.
God bless your family
