When my husband was diagnosed, I started attending a support group. Now, 8 years later, I’ve done a lot of gut-wrenching thinking about his journey. I’m wishing that it hadn’t taken so long to get a diagnosis, but also, that once the signs were there and the diagnosis was made, that the support group could have offered help to those who are diagnosed. There can be absolute terror for those folks as they descend into the world that begins to surround them. We had one gentleman who came often, who had a diagnosis and wanted to prepare his family, and himself, as best he could. In truth, we can never be fully prepared, especially if we are already struggling financially. We see these heartfelt stories of celebrities like Bruce Willis and Glen Campbel and Toni Bennett and Ronald Regan, who seem to effortlessly float through their journey…of course they do! They have family and caregivers around them 24/7, and all the money in the world to provide for their every need. Yes, it is still very sad, and I hurt for them and for their families. But when I sought help, we had one doctor within 100 miles who specialized in Geriatric medicine and Medicare did not cover her speciality. Things must change!
