Learn about Barbara Rabinowitz, namesake of the AFA Long Island Resource Center â–¼
Barbara Rabinowitz was born on September 2, 1932, in Brooklyn, as a first-generation American, with both parents being immigrants. She had a challenging childhood as an only child with a disabled father. Her mother worked various jobs to support the family, and although they sometimes relied on government assistance, they remained a supportive family unit. The memories of her anxious childhood significantly influenced her life.
At the age of 20, Barbara met her husband Leo, who was serving in the Korean War. Their connection blossomed into a love that lasted over fifty years, admired by family and friends. They lived modestly in Brooklyn, content with their lives, and raised their two sons in the same nurturing spirit despite financial constraints. Unfortunately, they took on the role of caregivers for her parents, which they did selflessly throughout their lives.

In her later years, Barbara faced the challenges of being a caretaker as her husband encountered health issues. They moved to an adult community in Marlboro, NJ, where she enjoyed playing mahjong and canasta with friends. Barbara celebrated the marriages of her two sons and actively participated in the lives of her five grandsons and new granddaughters, forming close bonds that left a lasting impact on her family.
As dementia began to affect her, Barbara experienced the painful effects of memory loss, which deeply affected her loved ones. Despite this struggle, she is remembered for her love, sacrifice, and the positive legacy she created for her family. Her life stands as a testament to her strength and dedication, and she is cherished by all who knew her.
Centrally located in Amityville, NY, the 11,500 square foot, state-of-the-art center — the first of its kind on Long Island — is accessible to the nearly 3 million residents of Suffolk and Nassau Counties.
