AFA’s Professional Certifications

AFA has two national certification programs available for dementia care professionals to highlight their specialized skills and expertise within the field of dementia care.

AFA Certified Comprehensive Dementia Care Provider (CDCP)

CDCP is a new, national advanced learning two-year certification for professionals who serve individuals living with dementia. Participants wishing to obtain CDCP certification are required to complete five AFA Professional Education courses from three different categories (general, clinical, and social and cultural competency) and a practicum seminar. Along with the certification, participants can also earn up to 12 social work CE credits through this program. Individuals who previously earned DCP certification (see below) are eligible for this advanced learning certification, but it is not required to obtain CDCP certification.

AFA Certified Dementia Care Partner (DCP)

DCP certification is awarded to professionals who successfully complete AFA’s Partners in Care: Supporting Individuals Living with Dementia training and pass the associated exam. Earning DCP certification demonstrates that the recipient understands the importance of building relationships and taking a strengths-based approach in dementia care and has learned the critical knowledge and skills to do so.
