SUMMARY:LIVE\, Interactive Webinar Training - Reframing Agitation and Aggression as Responsive Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:1.5 continuing education (general course) credits available \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIndividuals with Alzheimer’s and other types of neurodegenerative diseases can experience occasional to frequent instances of agitation or aggression. Many may assume the person can control such behaviors\, yet this is not the case. Neurodegenerative diseases affect the ability to comprehend situations and effectively communicate. By reframing agitation and aggression as responsive behaviors\, the person supporting the individual can help to identify what may be triggering the person; possibly their own approach or the environment\, and the most effective ways to reduce distress through care\, safety\, and support. This course will utilize case vignettes and group discussions to explore common expressions of agitation and aggression\, and what the person may be trying to communicate. Attendees will also learn about developing de-escalation strategies unique to the individual\, and what should be included when developing a safety plan. Attendees may ask and answer questions throughout the presentation and participate in instructor-led discussions\, case vignette discussions\, and a Q&A session at the end. \n\n\n\nFrom this workshop you will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nDescribe dementia’s effects on communication abilities and behaviors.\n\n\n\nExplain responsive behaviors as expressions of an unmet need.\n\n\n\nCategorize distressing behaviors into physical\, social\, and psychological needs.\n\n\n\nList effective strategies when responding to an individual who is demonstrating agitation and aggression.\n\n\n\n\n1.5 CE credits available for social workers licensed in an ASWB accredited state\, as well as New York State licensed social workers. (Please note: New Jersey is not currently covered under our ASWB accreditation\, please check back soon). \n\n\n\nThe Alzheimer’s Foundation of America #1898\, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 7/25/2024 – 7/25/2027. Social workers completing this course receive 1.5 continuing education credits. \n\n\n\nAlzheimer’s Foundation of America\, Inc. is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0222.  \n\n\n\nFor all disability accommodation needs\, please contact education@alzfdn.org.

SUMMARY:"Alzheimer's Disease: Early Detection & Diagnosis Matter" Educational Conference for Health Care Professionals
DESCRIPTION:New York Academy of Medicine \n\n\n\n 1216 5th Avenue New York\, NY 10029 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to view conference agenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany of us see the impact of Alzheimer’s disease firsthand in our personal lives and in our practices. An estimated 680\,000 individuals in New York\, New Jersey\, and Connecticut live with Alzheimer’s. Hundreds of thousands more have subjective cognitive decline but have not yet received a definitive diagnosis. \n\n\n\nDelays in detection and diagnosis prevent individuals from accessing vital services and therapeutics that are more effective in the early stages of dementia. Yet\, many individuals who are developing dementia or already have dementia do not receive a diagnosis or an accurate diagnosis\, according to the National Institute on Aging. Studies found more than 50% of patients with dementia had not received a clinical cognitive evaluation by a physician\, and that physicians were unaware of cognitive impairment in more than 40% of their cognitively impaired patients. \n\n\n\nThis interactive educational program will guide you–primary care physicians\, nurses\, and other healthcare professionals–to address current challenges and barriers that you may face due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the disorder. At this event\, you will learn how to conduct cognitive assessments; enhance your understanding of early detection and diagnosis for your older adult patients; approach the topic of brain health and cognitive impairment with your patients; and help you transition this new actionable knowledge into real-world health situations and increase your practice reach. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n Event Registration - “Alzheimer’s Disease: Early Detection & Diagnosis Matter” Educational Conference for Health Care Professionals\n \n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Phone(Required)Organization/Company (if applicable)Address(Required) \n \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n State\n \n \n ZIP Code\n \n \n Please register as:(Required)PhysicianPhysician AssistantNurse PractitionerHealth AdministratorOther Health Care ProfessionalMedical StudentNursing StudentMedical/Nursing School FacultyOtherWhat brings you to this event?(Required)Learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive screeningNetworkingHas your organization already undertaken “Early Detection for Alzheimer’s disease” initiatives?(Required)YesNoNot sureHow did you hear about this event?(Required)From AFAFrom another organizationThrough a coworker/colleagueThrough LinkedInThrough Facebook\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:In-Person Continuing Education Event: The Intricate Tapestry of Family Dynamics in Dementia Care
DESCRIPTION:The Intricate Tapestry of Family Dynamics in Dementia Care\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n2.5 CE credits for social workers\, certified case managers and other professions accepting social work credits. \n\n\n\n\n\nIN-PERSON EVENT \n\n\n\nThe Watermark at Brooklyn Heights 21 Clark St. Brooklyn NY 11201 \n\n\n\nWhat comprises a family can look different for many\, yet there is a shared understanding that family members rely on each other for emotional\, physical\, and economic support. They are one of the primary sources of relationship security or stress. Those experiencing greater stress or toxicity from family members may choose to seek community elsewhere. Yet when someone in the family receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related illness\, family members are sometimes forced to reunite\, pull their resources together\, and figure out how to work as a team. Even the most functioning of families struggle to navigate the changes in dynamics and relationships when addressing the care needed for their relative. This in-person workshop aims to teach attendees about the various types of familial relationships and roles\, to then effectively evaluate dynamics through illustrative assessment tools such as genograms and ecomaps. Such thorough assessments will help to meet the overall goal of ensuring everyone works as a team to create meaningful living and quality of life for the individual living with the illness\, as well as all of those within their support system. This workshop is fully interactive. Attendees may ask and answer questions throughout the presentation and participate in instructor-led discussions\, as well as case vignette discussions.\n\nIn addition\, Wenting Zhang will share insights into the Golden Tea program\, highlighting its approaches to creating meaningful moments and fostering connections within older adult communities. She will also join in conversation on cultural awareness\, sharing her perspectives on navigating these sensitive spaces.\n \n\n\n\nFrom this workshop attendees will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nDefine familial roles and relationship dynamics.\n\n\n\nDescribe how dementia-related illnesses can impact family dynamics.\n\n\n\nUtilize assessment tools when evaluating familial strengths and challenges.\n\n\n\nApply strategies to improve communication and collaboration among family members.\n\n\n\nDevelop activities specific to the person’s interests and strengths.\n\n\n\n\nAgenda 8:30am – Breakfast and Registration 9:00am – Sponsor presentations 9:20am – 12:00pm Workshop (10 min break included) \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\n\nJennifer Reeder\, LCSW Certified in Ecosystemic Structural Family Therapy Director of Education & Social Services Alzheimer’s Foundation of America \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsors:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Alzheimer’s Foundation of America #1898\, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. SUMMARY:LIVE\, Interactive Webinar Training - PTSD and Dementia: An Exploration of Brain Health and Trauma
DESCRIPTION:2 continuing education (clinical course) credits available \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nResearch and social awareness have made great strides in identifying how psychological trauma and chronic stress can cause mental illness and impact brain health. This in turn\, can increase the risk of dementia. Research also suggests a bidirectional relationship between PTSD and dementia\, meaning not only has PTSD been found to likely increase the risk of dementia\, but also those who have dementia can experience a re-emergence of traumatic memories. This is due to coping skills and the ability to suppress traumatic memories deteriorating along with the brain.  This clinical course will explore the impact of chronic stress and trauma on brain health\, as well as traumatic brain injuries – all of which are prevalent for veterans who have been deployed. Through case vignettes\, participants will learn about the potential triggers and experiences for those whose traumatic memories are re-emerging\, and how this may appear from the outside. To conclude\, this course will provide an overview of trauma-informed care which can be utilized as a universal approach to help promote supportive environments of healing\, trust\, and safety for those living with dementia. \n\n\n\nFrom this workshop you will learn to: \n\n\n\n\nExplain the impact of chronic stress\, TBI\, and PTSD on brain health.\n\n\n\nExplore the bidirectional relationship between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and dementia.\n\n\n\nRecognize the importance of utilizing trauma-informed care as a universal approach.\n\n\n\nIdentify effective ways to support someone with dementia who may be experiencing traumatic memories.\n\n\n\n\n2 CE credits available for social workers licensed in an ASWB accredited state\, as well as New York State licensed social workers. SUMMARY:LIVE\, Interactive Webinar Training - Safe Walking: A Strengths-Based Approach to Wandering
DESCRIPTION:2 continuing education (general course) credits available \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this course participants will learn about the cognitive and behavioral symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease that can result in a person getting lost when attempting to find their way or achieve a goal. SUMMARY:LIVE\, Interactive Webinar Training – The Impact of Substance Use Disorders Among Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:2 continuing education (clinical) credits available \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nCourse Description: In American society\, older adults with a substance use disorder can experience stigma and ageism. This can result in a lack of attention from healthcare providers\, family\, and loved ones. Ageism has even led to fewer assessment tools and effective treatments that are specific to older adults. This course will provide an overview of how substance use disorders affect the brain which can lead to an increased risk of neurodegenerative disease and Alzheimer’s. Substance misuse\, PTSD\, depression\, and other mental illnesses are underdiagnosed among older adults due to the overlapping of symptoms for all of these disorders\, as well as normal\, age-related health changes. Participants will then learn about the connection between substance use disorders and neurodegenerative diseases\, especially chronic alcohol misuse and early onset Alzheimer’s disease. This course will then explain the specific barriers older adults experience when accessing healthcare which can lead to an oversight of chronic substance misuse. Lastly\, attendees will explore how to incorporate the family and support systems in treatment and recovery to ensure a comprehensive approach. This course is fully interactive. Attendees may ask and answer questions throughout the presentation and participate in instructor-led discussions\, as well as case vignette discussions\, and a Q&A session at the end. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nFrom this course you will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nDefine addiction and different forms of substance use.\n\n\n\nIdentify the relationship between substance use and neurodegenerative disease.\n\n\n\nDescribe substance use-related stigma and neurodegenerative disease-related stigma.\n\n\n\nAssess different barriers to access and meaningful treatments for intervention.\n\n\n\nApply effective strategies to reduce stigma leading to an increase in health/well-being of individuals w/substance use disorders.\n\n\n\n\nFor complete course description\, please click here.
