AFA Fireside Chat: Health Care Disparities for the Elderly

August 15, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm EDT

Episode 8: Health Care Disparities for the Elderly

Age is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, and older Americans are one of the fastest growing demographics in the country. The Administration for Community Living projects the number of people age 65 and over to grow from more than 54 million now to more than 80 million by 2040. Together with that aging population comes an expected growth in the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention projects the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s to more than double by 2060. This episode will explore the impact these increases will have on our health system, the role “ageism” may play in deterring older Americans from getting memory loss symptoms examined, the negative impact that loneliness and isolation have on health,  and ways we can break down barriers to care.
