AFA Care Connection Sunset Series: Understanding Family Dynamics in Dementia Care

Course Description: In this training, we will review the different types of relationships that may be present in the life of an individual living with dementia. A review of family dynamics and exploration of how to identify and assess these dynamics will be reviewed. Additionally, we will explore different ways the care partner can work with families, understand their emotions and feelings, and effectively communicate with them to ensure meaningful living and quality of life is achieved for both the individual living with the illness and the family member.
From this training, you will learn to:
- Define and describe family roles
- Describe how dementia can impact an individuals’ family and dynamic
- Apply communication strategies that can assist in supporting the individual and family impacted by this illness
5:30pm – Registration
6:00pm-6:30pm – Understanding relationships and family dynamics
6:30pm – 7:00pm – Dementia care and the family
7-8pm – Develop communication strategies
Target Audience: Licensed social workers (beginning, intermediate & advanced) and any health care professionals
